Tap a pad. The screen shows one octave, twelve semitones in three columns: from C at the top of the first column to B at the bottom of the last.

Swipe sideways. A quick flick moves a whole octave; a slow drag stops at any column. Pulling up from the bottom of the screen returns to the last note you played, or to octave 5 if you haven’t played one yet.

Tap the instrument name next to the clock and choose Piano, Strings, Brass or Voice.

Turn the Digital Crown. The volume is kept until the next launch.

Hold a pad until it pulses. Raise the watch to your ear and double tap the fingers of the hand wearing it. The note plays at your ear. Tapping the pulsing pad plays it too; holding it or tapping anywhere else cancels.

Double tap is available on Apple Watch Series 9, Ultra 2 and later. On older watches, Evertone first learns the move: “Hand on your shoulder, by the neck”, three times, with your hand on the opposite shoulder. After that it plays when it recognises the move.

Turn up the volume with the crown: at its lowest setting the sound is barely audible. Also check the system volume in the watch’s Settings (Sounds & Haptics). If Bluetooth headphones are connected to the watch, the sound may be playing there.

Equal temperament with A5 = 440 Hz. Octave 5 is the one starting at middle C.
